What weighs on him most is the newspaper library. A few years ago, for example, he said: «L African immigration…these are people who They don’t have the same culture as usthese are people who come not to be French, but to enjoy our social rights«He recently linked mass immigration to rising crime in France.
Bruno Retailleau He is the new Minister of the Interior and, of the entire Executive, the most controversial figure. The left has already warned against his “reactionary” profile. and not even the Macronist deputies, those of President Emmanuel Macron’s party, wanted him in the government team, considering him too conservative.
A few minutes after making his position official, he posted a message on the social network x (formerly Twitter) with his goals prominently featured in the portfolio: «Restore order, restore order, restore order». Head of the conservative Los Republicanos party in the Senate, he was the one who pushed for the immigration law passed a year ago to be tightened, with Grald Darmanin as head of the Interior, thanks to the votes of Los Republicanos and also of the far-right National Rally party, that of Marine Le Pen.
A Catholic and father of three, Retailleau was a member of parliament from 1994 to 1997 before joining the UMP, Nicolas Sarkozy’s party, in 2010. At the time he opposed gay marriage. and last March voted against include in the French Constitution the right to abortion. This was finally introduced into the Magna Carta, with the vote of all parties.
These are the two positions that most worry the left, which believes it can do so take steps backwards in social progress that France has achieved in recent years. Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has obtained from his successor Michel Barnier a commitment that this will not happen and that gay rights will be protected.
He is accused of being in favour of some far-right ideas, but has criticised the «betrayal» of his party colleague, Eric Ciotti, when he allied himself with Marine Le Pen after Emmanuel Macron dissolved the Assembly last June and called for early legislative elections.
One of his goals is to tweak immigration lawthat he himself voted for. What he wants is to recover some of the harshest articles that the Constitutional Council censored. They are trying to eliminate medical care for immigrants and replace it with, among other things, emergency aid. «Expel more and regularize less,» he said.
Retailleau has already had his first clash with another member of the government, Justice Minister Didier Migaud, a member of the Socialist Party and the only representative of the left in Barnier’s team. The Interior Minister said that in France there is a «non-execution of sentences». The head of Justice told him that «the rate of execution of sentences has never been so high in the country». «There is no such thing as lax justice», he recalled.
THE death of a young woman The 19-year-old, whose body was found this weekend in the forest of Bologna, Paris, gave him reason to remember that we must toughen the sanctions. The author is an immigrant who has been ordered to leave French territory: «We must evolve our legal arsenal.»
