Head of the conservative Los Republicanos party in the Senate, he was the one who pushed for the immigration law passed a year ago to be tightened, with Grald Darmanin as head of the Interior, thanks to the votes of Los Republicanos and also of the far-right National Rally party, that of Marine Le Pen.
A Catholic and father of three, Retailleau was a member of parliament from 1994 to 1997 before joining the UMP, Nicolas Sarkozy’s party, in 2010. At the time he opposed gay marriage. and last March voted against include in the French Constitution the right to abortion.
