A barge collides with a bridge in Texas and destroys the tracks

Last Wednesday a barge collided with Pelican Island Bridge, Galveston, Texas, and caused partial damage to both that infrastructure and the railway line that crosses it, forcing the closure of traffic, but without causing any casualties. Local authorities told the press that the impact caused an oil spill in the area, but they found that there were no injuries.

Galveston County indicated on the social network The vessel involved, according to this source, has the capacity to transport approximately 30,000 gallons of oil, but the amount leaked is unknown.

Members of the Coast Guard, Galveston emergency services, the port and the Texas Department of Transportation responded to the scene, among others.

The damaged bridge connects Galveston to Pelican and It’s the only way to get to that island, where Texas A&M Galveston University is located. This university center also reported Wednesday in networks that it is working with local and state authorities to determine the impact on campus.

This incident occurs less than two months later, in Baltimorea cargo ship crashed into one of the columns of the Key Bridge by Francis Scott and caused its collapse and the death of six workers, all Latin Americans, who were carrying out maintenance work at that time.

The preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed this Tuesday that on the eve of the accident, which occurred in the early hours of March 26, the Singapore-flagged ship lost power twice while docked in the port of Baltimore.
